One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled.
It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear.
It was the age of gargoyles.
Stone by day, warriors by night,
we were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect,
frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years.
Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live
again!
We are defenders of the night!
We are

In 994 A.D., Goliath and the few remaining Gargoyles help defend the Scottish castle where they live. In exchange, the human occupants protect the Gargoyles during the day, since they turn to stone from dawn to dusk. The Gargoyles are put under a spell, and they remain in stone form for one thousand years. When they wake up they find that their castle has been moved atop a skyscraper in New York City, thanks to billionaire Xanatos. He wants their help, but the Gargoyles are leery of treachery.
Stone by day, alive by night, the Gargoyles are stronger, braver, more fantastic than any superhero you've ever met! Strangers in a strange city in a time not their own, they are determined to defend the innocent. But can they hide forever? Are there any humans they can trust? In DEADLY FORCE, the streets of New York just got a whole lot meaner.

In reality, GARGOYLES are the grotesque carvings of faces and bodies of humans and animals. Serving originally as water spouts to direct the water clear of a wall, they can often be found on (Gothic) buildings and churches. In medieval times, the function of Gargoyles changed. They became representations of religious events, created for the illiterate population to "read".
From the fact that Gargoyles are such hideous creatures stems the notion that they were created to avert evil. Placed on the outside of buildings supposedly kept evil out. In later times, most of them became mainly ornamental and served no other purpose than decoration
